Astronomy? Anyone have it as a hobby?

I was thinking of maybe taking up astronomy as a hobby! My parents keep asking me what I would like for Christmas and I was thinking of asking for a telescope.

Does anyone do this hobby? If so - is it fun/hard? Is there any websites you can recommend? I don't wanna get a telescope and point it to some random part of space! I would like to do it right! What are your views/thoughts on this? smile.gif

I was also considering learning how to play chess and learn strategies etc... anyone do this?

I'm thinking of changing from Physics to Astronomy in my university choices...which subject do you think will be better in real life?

I can play chess , badly, but still tongue.gif biggrin.gif I don't play it regularly but it's a good timewaster when your bored. However, it always leads to me and the sister arguing rolleyes.gif

Lol. I usually play against the computer, but it beats me in no time at all.
