just doing some revision for my prelim thats coming up soon and i am not sure what the octane rating is ?
why is it called that because benzene does have anything to do with the number 8 ?

I didn't think octane ratings were in higher... but anyways
Octane rating is a scale measuring the 'anti-knocking' properties of a fuel as compared to octane (more specifically 2,2,4-trimethylpentane), ie a fuel with an octane rating of 100 is the same as pure octane, whereas an octane rating of 80 has the same properties as an 80% octane mixture (the remaining 20% is taken as heptane). Roughly the scale measures the activation energies of the combustion of the fuel.
