2002 - Multiple Choice - Q31(b)

Past Paper 2002, section A Q31b says you may wish to use data booklet...wot are you sposed to look for on page 10 of data booklet to work out which elements combine to form the most covalent character? huh.gif

The electronegativities.
whichever two elements have the least difference in electronegativity between them

You look at the electroegativities and the majority will probably be polar covalent molecules whereas hydrogen and phosphorus both have an electronegativity of 2.2 so are pure covalent.

Generally an electronegativity difference greater than 2 for polar molecules if my memory serves me correct.
