Have a look at the Further Calculus notes - Examples 5 and 6 in section 5 are very similar.

It's all about using the fact that differentiation and integration are inverse processes.

a) f(x) = (8-X power3.gif)^0.5
= 1/2(8-X power3.gif)^(-1/2) . -3x power2.gif
= -3/2X power2.gif(8-X power3.gif)^-0.5

b) = integral.gif (X power2.gif) / (8-X power3.gif)^0.5
= integral.gif X power2.gif(8-X power3.gif)^-0.5 | multiply by -3/2 to get same answer as in part a.
= integral.gif -3/2X power2.gif(8-X power3.gif)^-0.5 | then because u can go backwards ie Diff -> integrate and integrate -> Diff, u get the original equation. multiply through by -2/3 to undo what u did above
= -2/3 (8-X power3.gif)^0.5 + C

hope tht helps. PK cool.gif
