This is an example of the Section Formula, or using the method in the HSN notes in Vectors:

The line AD is effectively split into two parts (for the purposes of this question); AB and BD

AB/BD = 1/2

2AB = BD
2(b-a) = d-b
2b - 2a = d - b
d = 3b - 2a

put in the vector values for a and b (from the coordinates given in the question) to get

D(8,3,-1)
