(had to start a new thread since the other one has been locked)

Regarding Allan's reply, remember this is Paper I - do you think you're expected to work out 6^4 without a calculator? I think there's probably an easier way.

Here's a way to do it without needing to know 6^4:

log(6^4) - log (4^2) = 1
log(6^4 / 4^2 ) = 1
log( [(6^2) / (2^2)]^2 ) = 1
log( [ { (2^2)*(3^2) } / (2^2)]^2 ) = 1
log( [3^2]^2 ) = 1
log(81) = 1
x = 81

Sorry if it's hard to follow in text form.

I just wrote that down and I've gotta say, its pretty solid for three marks.

I'd say in an exam that would put a red flag up in any students head and being honest I'd problably aim for about 1 mark in that then swiftly move on!
