#89188 What's On Your Mind

Posted by Ally on 19 September 2006 - 06:32 PM in General Chat

Aww, just give it time. smile.gif The first week is more or less 'What's your name? / What do you study? / Where are you from? Where are you staying?', mixed together with many, many drunk people biggrin.gif. Try chatting to your flatmates/people living next door to you since you're stuck with them for the whole year so might aswell make friends with them. biggrin.gif

Also, once you actually start your course you'll meet many people with the same interests as yourself. Most of my mates are doing the same course as me; although that might be because they keep us medics away from everyone else. dry.gif

Don't be afraid to go and introduce yourself to people!

I think the tuition fee for medicine in some unverisities in Scotland this year is 2700 (correct me if I'm wrong)...

Scottish domiciled and EU students, studying at an institution in Scotland, are entitled to free tuition. We will pay the tuition fees in full, up to 1,200 depending on your individual circumstances. If you are not eligible to have your fees paid because of our previous study rules, you will only have to pay the standard 1,200 fee to your college or university you can apply to us to pay the difference between the normal standard tuition fee of 1,200 and the higher tuition fee of 1,700 (2,700 for medicine).

STILL not heard from them.

Ally: Are you all doing medicine?

Not aimed at Ally, but academia en generale: why does everyone assume that anyone who gets 5As is destined for medicine? Frankly, I couldn't think of a more cliched path and I think you should maybe consider if it is really for you, or for your benefactors. I know that my parents and teachers (with the best intentions) were all pushing me into medicine, slowly and easily - much in the same way a glacier moves through a V-shaped valley, but oh how I long to care for such geographical images anymore biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Heh. It was more to do with the fact that in every third post people were saying they were wanting to do medicine, and not because that since they've achieved 5A's that I presumed they were wanting to do it.

And just to offer my perspective of things, I never got pushed into doing medicine at all. My guidance teacher rarely asked us what we wanted to do, and when I did tell him I wanted to do medicine, it's not like he treated me any differently from anyone else in the class.

The only reason I can think of teachers pushing students is to help them achieve their goal, since the minimum requirements for nearly every university is AAAAB (that being the reason why medicine is 'so different'). So maybe they just want their pupils to continue studying hard?

I just found it really upsetting, everyone was so helpless and I don't think I could cope with working in that environment.

I think that's the whole point really. To give you a wider perspective of what healthcare involves...

As you've noticed, some "$%% with too much time on their hands has 'hacked' HSN. Unfortunately, since George & Steve are on holiday and no-one has adminCP access not much can be done.

I'll try and get rid of the topics however. smile.gif

If you've noticed any other problems, please post here.

Zidane got the Golden Ball award. Musta liked his headbutt. cool2.gif

Apparently, Zidane's mum is ill in hospital and Materrazzi called his mum a 'whore'. If that's true, I'm dissappointed zidane didn't go for his face..
