you must number them so the numbers are as small as possible

ah, so if the numbers are to be as small as possible it would be 1,3,3 trichlorobutane?

but aren't you supposed to number from the side with the greatest bumber of functional groups? unsure.gif

Yes it would indeed be 1,3,3-trichlorobutane
You should number from the side with the greatest number of functional groups, but this question has no functional groups !! Therefore, just keep your numbers as low as possible !! smile.gif

#88105 Systematic Naming / Nomenclature Problem

I would call that
1,2,3-tricholorobutane because there is a Cl on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd carbon.

And it would not be 2,3,4-trichlorobutane because you must number them so the numbers are as small as possible, does that make sense ?

Hope that helps !!

Do you have to book for these things, or can you just turn up? Also, is anyone going to an open day at St. Andrews? I can't seem to find any information on these.
