Hey just wondering if anyone else has received any offers from the uni's they applied to?
I've had one so far from Glasgow, which is surprising as I thought it would take a lot longer than this!

Well done on your offer natalie1062!

What was it for and when did you send your application off to UCAS?

I only sent my application off about a week ago so a while yet before I get any decisions.

Hey, I sent my application away on the 11th of this month. So far I've had an unconditional offer from Glasgow for science (I applied for 'medical biochemistry' but may decide to change it later).
I also applied for dentistry at Glasgow and Dundee, as well as prosthetics & other biology/chemistry courses, but I haven't heard anything about them yet.
Wishing everyone luck!

Hey Natalie! I am at Glasgow Uni jus this year, in the science dept, if u wanna know any info about wot u do in first year or wot u do when starting, jst PM me

One thing I will tell u is that even tho u are doin medical biochemistry, u dont do that til 3rd year, if u still want to do it then

in first and second year, u do three main subjects (as u are in the science subjects, it is usually three sciences u do but could be from arts, or business skool)

the science subjects are: maths, physics, chem, biology, stats, computing science, geography, exploring the cosmos, science fundamentals, psychology... u wouln normally do three of these in first year, then three OR 2 in second year as long and then go on to your chosen degree in 3rd year, which could be any of the subjects u don in first year

Hi Shandogg, what course did you actually apply for as your degree?
How are you finding it so far; how is the work rate and the difficulty?

Think I'll definitely be keeping this offer as my insurance incase I dont get my Higher chemistry this year...I got three A's and a B last year and an A for Int.2 chemistry (as I never did chem at standard grade).

My first choice was prosthetics at Strathclyde but iv heard the science faculty is really good at Glasgow so I think id be pretty happy to go there smile.gif
Is there anything you have found that you dont enjoy - either in the course or just generally about the uni?

Hey!

I applied for Maths at Glasgow and that was all, the prospectus advised u to apply to only 1 course in the science faculty, as wotever course u apply to, it gets u into the whole faculty, so it would be a waste of other choices. The workload isnt too bad, but u still get the same amount of homework if not more as skool!

The faculty is really good tho, a lot of flexibility and support!

work rate is really fast, its like each lecture has a different topic....lectures are only the basis, u have to spend more time bulkin up the notes u got from the lectures

you may have an unconditional for MA Psychology/Physics...that means nothin tho! u now have the option to do any 3 subjects.... MA means nothin either, I got into MSci Maths, but u start off at the same level as every single fresher, the MSci level doesnt come into place until u have achieved a BSc in 4th year. to do MSci, u have to get the best grades throughout uni from 1st year to 4th year, there is no guarantee that u'll get to do it!

eg, u could end up doin Biology, Chemistry and Maths in first year for talkin sakes, then u whittle them down to Biology in 4th year and get a BSc degree, if u want a MSci degree, u stay on another year. ANYTHIN IS POSSIBLE now that u have got into Glasgow! My mate is doin.

and yeh, they are really good at replyin, they were the fastest last year.....Strahtclyde are really really slow, they took the longest on average.Ps do u not mean MSci instead of MA....MA means Master of Arts....but u are doin Sciences so it should be MSci

Hope I gave u an insight to wot happens!

hm, shandogg, you're doing 3 subjects, does that mean you're doing 3 times the level of work of someone who say went to strathclyde and is only doing comp. sci?

I thought you did 3 or 5 subjects in your first year at Stathclyde? There's definitely one uni that makes you do 5... mayb it ain't that one.

I'm going to apply for the Biology course at Glasgow as well as other biology related courses at other unis.

My school is slow, we won't actually get on to ucasapply until after the October break!

Anyone at uni have labs? What are they like and how much practical work is there?
The race is long, and in the end it's only with yourself.

This is something I am confused.

I know at Strathclyde you pick 4 different subjects e.g. for me it would hopefully be Accouting and 3 other business subjects.

Is that right?

What about Glasgow? Is it the same?

I read the online prospectus and it says that if you combine it with another subject, the psychology you do doesn't change, just that you'd do the other subject. For Psychology/physics I'd likely end up doing Psychology, Physics, Maths and Biology. And yeah it said MA, but it also said something about this changing based on the other subject of choice.

I have labs for Geography and Physics. There is a lot of practical work involved! they last for 3 hours and are fortnightly. 2moro I have a three hour geog lab where I am given an area of the westend, with my group, I go to that are and study the streets and sites to find any underlying geography, I also study the development of the area form 1984...I do this for the next three weeks then do a presentation on it.... I also learn how to draw cartographically in other labs and I will also be doin a project on physical geography of the river kelvin...so yeh, a lot of practical stuff goin on!

Oh yeh, ure rite....if you apply to psychology at glasgow u must do that in first year cos its such a popular course...but u do TWO other subjects along with this...my mate from skool applied for Psychologyat Glasgow and got in... she does Biology(which is recommended as a lot of the course is Biology based) and Science Fundamentals in her first year(u may want to consider doin statistics as u must do level 1 statistics, either as part of year one or year 2, my mate will have to do Stats in her 2nd year...this stats rule only applies to psychology students)

a lab is a practical class. The practical work you do is supposed to help u understand the theoretical work u do.

U carry out experiments, do fieldwork etc...the results u get should reflect the work u do in lectures and tutorials which are both theoretical classes with written work and discussion
