of course it shouldn't info systems is an area of IT that is worth an entire course

BTW can we get away from this idea that admin and computing are somehow related please!!

If i am not here i am somewhere else

The same can be said about Physics and Maths; doesn't mean they are the same thing though.

Even though I detested Information Systems I think the course for Information Systems shouldn't be scrapped; it should be restuctured which has already happened and the new course will commence for the 2005/2006 session.

I totally hated that subject (which was partly due to our pathetic teacher) but it does have good elements in it. After 2005, they're scrapping all the out of date stuff and (hopefully) it should be a good and relevant course after that.

Yeah I agree with Allan.

The best thing for Information Systems would probably be if the SQA appointed new examiners/markers/panel members, as the current one's don't seem to be doing a good job!

info system is a much more narrow scoped course compared to computing where the course evolves around databases and other structures for storing data. i haven't done the course myself but thats how i see it anyway

If i am not here i am somewhere else

Whenever someone asks what Information Systems is, I say that Computing is about how a computer works whereas Information Systems is about what you can do with computers.

This includes things like storing data (databases) and also some more general business orientated implications of information.

A lot of schools are favouring Information Systems over Computing in the area I come from.

I did both subjects (in different years) and found Information Systems easier overall, but I still think its a good course.

I voted no because I like Info Systems (I'm doing it this year) !
Also because it seems its the exam board and not the course with the problem!
Also my school wouldnt let me do admin as it would be "too hard" and I got an A in computing, a B in business and have been predicted at A in Info Systems!
Half ideas, half quality, half a million pound law suit!

We're jst about to start our predictions, in consultation with our teachers, at school.
I was predicted an A this time lst year for Info's Systems and i got it, so i'd say early predictions can be a good gauge of your final result smile.gif

Yeh I suppose that true , I have been predicted at an A in Higher Spanish, Crash Higher Accounting and Higher Info Systems and a B at Adv Maths.

However our school predictions can be very wrong sometimes.
Last year I was predicted at 1 A and 4 Bs but I actually got 4As n 1B!

Ok we get that! However there are aspects which overlap and aspects which are info systems which are included in both. I would however say Admin is more like certain parts of Standrad Garde computing (ie mail merge letters) and Higher Business along with a lot of unique aspect though!

About the Maths and Physics yes some parts overlap and yes that doesnt make them the same, good point and good point about the restructuring.

I dont think it should be scrapped. I'm doing both courses and I've found that there is no problem with either of the courses.

I dont think we touched databases at all in Higher Computing, whereas in Higher Information Systems we did the whole first unit (Database Systems) around and in databases. What makes you think that these parts should be incorporated?

I think the new course starts next session, which has been changed quite significantly, I'm told.

although information systems isn't my favourite subject i dunt think it should be included in admin. (i also do) It already touches upon databases within the course and i find both courses help eachother in times! both courses are Very different!

Yep, your quite right.

Next session (2005/6) normalising is done to 2NF and 3NF (thank goodness).

Enjoy, whoever is taking it next year wink.gif
