The SQA have made a MISTAKE in their marking schemes for the Higher 2004 Chemistry exam

For Q2. (b)(i) The answer should be 1.5*10 atoms and not 1.5*10 atoms.

Am I right in saying that this marking scheme is the exact same one that was sent out to markers when they were marking the papers?

WOW you are right. I can't remember what the question in the paper was, but based on the working in the answers the answer should be, as you say, 1.5*10^23.


I don't know whether they have made a mistake in the question or the answer here but if this is the exact document provided for markers then think of the reporcussions.

Surely though experienced chemistry markers would spot that right away...


I think we should contact the SQA about this.. I will ask my chemistry teacher about that tomorrow...

Yeah I've emailed them about it. Not sure if I'll get a reply though.

Got a pretty quick response from them:

Thank you for comment. the error was corrected at the markers meeting but has not made it through to this typed version. I will arrange for the correction to made ASAP.

That clears that up then.

Still though, they had quite a long time (about 2.5 months) to correct it on the typed version.

it is common for the SQA to make mistakes in papers, they made the same error 3 years in a row for my college course and published the wrong answers. I am actually worried about receiving my results since they done the same for my exam as well. My college lecturers did get to read the paper before we done the exam and circled the questions that were wrongly worded and the parts where they had the information mixed up for the psychology section so i hope they take notice.
