Ive heard it's really difficult to get into cambridge. A mega-smart guy in my year (he wason the front page of The Herald tongue.gif after the exams) got 5 A's and an int 2 A, this year he needs 2 adv higher A's and an adv B plus he has to attend physics courses otuside of school and show extra keeness (really couldnt think of a word) before being considered.

4 people form my school (which is tbh a pretty gd quality school - if youforget the crumbling building rolleyes.gif ) got accepted into Cambridge...is that a gd rate? i have no idea how many applied though!

I'm thinking that Strathclyde/Glasgow will be more than adequate for wee me tongue.gif

Oh yeah, what actually makes places like Oxford?cambridge so good...?

It's probably mainly down to the fact that they have a very high quality of teaching, and also because only the top pupils/students are accepted to study there, making the standard very high. Historically they have a very good reputation, which they maintain, and they are probably the British equivalents of the American Ivy League universities (Havard, Princeton, Yale etc.)

They're top of the league tables for pretty much every subject. They're regarded as the two top unis both here and abroad. They've got a really good teaching system where you're unlikely to be taught with more than a couple of other students, and taught by experts among the best in their fields. A lot of people including myself biggrin.gif also like the collegiate system.
But people like different things about them I think smile.gif

i big reason also for anyone how is trying to get into any university in England is that you are competing with english people with good A-levels which are 2 year courses and worth quite a bit more than highers so they tend to want a number of good advanced highers which isn't always easy with many not being given the opportunity or having little or no teaching because of lack of teachers

If i am not here i am somewhere else

It was really difficult (time was the biggest problem), but almost everybody who sat it this year thought it was impossible too which is good in a perverse sort of way. The average mark last year was about 1/2 marks, so it's designed to be really difficult.

Ah well, suppose it evens itself out if everyone felt it was hard. Did you manage to complete all of it on time?

Where do you have to actually go to sit it? Is it organised by the school or do you have to go all the way down to Cambridge?

I managed to finish the first paper (35 questions, 1 hour) with about 5 mins to spare, the second paper (27 questions, 1/2 an hour) I finished just as we were told pens down. The third paper (1 essay in 30 mins) was OK.

To give you an example of the papers, this years essay questions were:

1. Individual freedom and the rule of law are mutually incompatible. Discuss.

2. (I did this one)
"There is more to healing than the application of scientific knowledge" - advance an argument that medicine based not entirely on scientific knowledge is worthless and balance this argument with one to the contrary.

3. "Our genes evolved for a stone age lifestyle. Therefore we must adopt stone age habits if we are to be healthy." - Discuss

I sat it at my school. Basically if you want to sit the exam you need to 1 - Convince your exams coordinator that it exists, 2 - convince them of the fact that you have to sit it, 3 - convince them off the fact that it is important to actually register you for it. Took a while, but eventually I got registered (on the dead line)

Well, I applied to Newcastle, Sheffield, Edinburgh and Dundee. I've had aknowledgements from Newcastle and Dundee, but havn't heard anything back from Sheffield or Edinburgh. *Fingers crossed!* Good luck with your other interviews aswell. Would you be able to post some of the types of questions they ask you? A couple of people at my school have got interviews at Aberdeen too (well one boy has already had it).
