hi. i found a website with good ideas on basking shark. i saved the document and have pasted everything below.

each idea matches up to a technique and if you need any more info, i have more notes that my english teacher gave me.

hope it helps!!!

Stanza 1:
The poet gets a shock – he is first of all disorientated, “a rock where none should be”, and then threatened “rise with a slounge”.

Stanza 2:
He feel that somehow this encounter has been a positive experience. He gives the human view of the shark.

Stanza 3:
His whole view of the relationships between creatures is disturbed: he sees himself on the shark’s family tree rather than the shark being on his (i.e. seeing the world as not being just about humans)

Stanza 4:
It takes him back to his origins – the origins of all life: that we are all part of the original “slime”.

Stanza 5:
He now asks: who is the stranger? who is all out of proportion? who is out of place? who is the destructive force (all ideas to do with “monster”)?
He realises that this change of perspective in his thinking is a temporary thing.

Stanza 1:
“To stub…to me” – word choice/inverted sentence/repetition/parenthesis
“rock” – metaphor
“be/sea/me” – terza rima-unusual rhyme scheme distorting the sentence structure
“slounge” – word choice/ alliteration (with “sea”)

Stanza 2:
“But…enough” – sentence structure
“on…rain” – metaphor/parenthesis
“roomsize…brain” – metaphor/humour

Stanza 3:
“displaced” – double meaning
“shoggled me centuries back” – word choice/humour/metaphor
“decadent townee” – word choice/ humour
“shook…tree” – metaphor/paradox

Stanza 4:
“Swish...clearer” – analogy/word choice
“I saw me” – sentence structure
“Emerging…everything” – metaphor/word choice

Stanza 5:
“So…monster? – rhetorical question/repetition(of “monster”)
“for twenty seconds” – detail
“sail after sail” – repetition
“tall…tail” – unusual sentence structure
(alliteration in these last two lines of stanza)
