I was helping my girlfriend with some stuff as I got a B last year and am not bad at maths.
However, we stumbled upon what seems to be a really difficult question and I was just wondering if any of you had any ideas on how to tackle it?

I'll not post all the working; the method should be enough to get you going 
Firstly, find
- then, since PQR is a right-angle, you can state 
.
You now have the gradient of QR, and one of the points on it, so you can find its equation.
Then put x=5 into that equation, to get the coordinates of R (and k is the y-coordinate).

Yes, k=-5 is the correct answer.
