Does anyone know the arguments for and against immigrants in the USA?
Also if anyone could give a brief description of proposition 187 [I think] that would be great.

Goodluck to all for tomorrow! :]

California Proposition 187 was a proposal to deny illegal immigrants the right to social services. See http://www.ccir.net/REFERENCE/187-History.html

For immigration to the USA more generally have a look at http://www.immigrationdebate.com/

for

the usa was founded on immigration and it would be a mistake to close the door - immigrants bring a lot to the economy and culture

in Texas and California especially immigrants are vital for the economies of these areas - businesses use their cheap labour

in due course immigrants have higher wage levels and less dependance on welfare benefits than native-born Americans - they are a net asset

many immigrants are political refugees from china korea central and south america - they need a 'haven' to escape from persecution

states like california have agreed to educate and house the children of illegal immigrants - this will help them to integrate US society

more illegal immigration will cut down on crime and exploitation 'coyotes' will charge poor desperate mexicans around $100 just to go on a list for a border crossing and then another $2000 for a dash across the Rio Grande.

greater levels of legal immigration will prevent wages dropping further as legal immigrants will have to be paid wages and have condition equivalent to American workers creating a fairer job markt

against

new immigrants are uneducated and unskilled and are seen as a drain on the health, welfare and education systems

immigration is a major issue in california and texas - proposition 187 passed by people in state vote - evidence of opposition to immigration

areas are populated by different ethnic groups often experience tension and antagonism - newcomers are harassed

before september 11th it was an economic issue now it is more to do with security hence the tightening of regulations and laws

whites face competion from asians for places at college or for jobs in the high tech industry

politically immigration could have a big effect on attitudes to social issues such as abortion or foreign policy issues (most hispanics are catholic and many are very traditional in their attitudes)

Thanks so much, your great :3

I just found this as well incase anyone else needs it
  • Employers want cheap Labour
  • Immigrants are young and economically active, and contribute to the economy by as much as $30 Billion per year
  • Cultural diversity is enhanced by immigrants
  • Immigrants bring new skills and create new jobs. This is particularly true of Asians
  • Wage levels for the poorer paid are kept low
  • Immigration is costing the taxpayer too much for health, education and welfare payments
  • American culture is being overwhelmed, and English is no longer the main lanuage in many areas.
  • When the economy is in decline many complain that jobs and colelge places are being taken by immigrants. The "Angry White Males", blacks and resident Hispanics also complain about the new immigrants - the Asians and the "new" Hispanics

I like using "WASPs" (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants).

Immigrant Arnold Schwarzenegger voted for Proposition 187 and wants increased border security.

Is that due to Affirmative Action? I thought that, that was declared unconstitutional?

For middle class white America that typically votes for George Bush and lives in white suburbia away from inner city ethnic minority neighbourhoods or ethnic minority suburban ghettos.

its because asians tend to be well educated and they tend to be good in the 'high tech' industries - many asian immigrants were behind the hi-tech industries in California's 'silicon valley' so this means less whites are going to get a job in hi-tech industries if there are Asian immigrants that are better qualified

George Bush - he is republican, he represents big business and immigrants = cheap labour therefore he is for immigration as he wants the hispanic vote
hench guest worker scheme, make the 11 million legal

cultural liberals
- democrats, live and let live attitude; think immigration adds to american culture and thinks that they are good for the economy so they are for

minutemen
- they observe illegal activity and they report it
-their thoughts are : - terrorism, Border patrol catch 1 in 3 illegal crossers = 1.2 million crossings per year
-protect US culture ' being invaded by migratory means' - tacos vs burger ideology
-lack of man power on the border 'the president needs to send some men down here'
therefore they are against immigration

lowpaid workers
do immigrants drive wages down?illegals dont need to get the minimum wage = poorest US born are worst affected eg Scott Joyal, wrote article in seattle times in 2004, couldnt get 7 jobs due to illegal immigrants
so african americans are most affected

therefore they are against immigration
