As some of you may know, the University of Glasgow is holding a student referendum next month on whether Glasgow joins NUS or not.

I was just wondering if any of the other Scottish unis are members and what their your views on the NUS are. smile.gif

Edinburgh joined the NUS last year, and I can't say I've noticed a difference biggrin.gif

Well I've got no idea really; I'm not involved in student politics at all.

I don't think I even voted on it, because I'm not informed enough to have an opinion either way.

That is correct, St Andrews isnt affiliated to the NUS and is one of a number of Unis in Scotland that isnt. The NUS is costly for your union, they charge the union in the region of £22,000 a year just as "affiliation fees" and each student has to pay extra in order to have an NUS card. As far as student representation goes your union SRC will provide far better representation than the NUS would.

The upshot is that NUS means higher prices at the bar as thats where most unions have to make increases to cater for the £22,000 fee. Also your union would have to change some of what it offers on tap as being in the NUS means you stock only beers that they buy as part of their buying consortium. So basically its a waste of money, I havent noticed any difference to my life by not being in the NUS.

my answer is "yes & i really am not bothered either way" lol.

i'm very anti-NUS at the minute though, purely because they now make you pay for a discount card. defeats the purpose, methinks!
when i'm dancin' with you,
tomorrow doesn't matter,
turn that music up,
till the windows start to shatter,
cos you're the only one who can get me on my feet,
& i can't even dance

Yes, it does seem a bit strange to have to pay for a discount card.

I do remember from the referendum last year that the 'yes to NUS' camp argued that the cost in affiliation fees was more than covered by the savings made by the union through the buying consortium. And I've never drunk a beer in my life, so I couldn't tell you if they've changed!

Yes, but not everywhere accepts just ordinary student cards.

And when it comes to online student deals, you 99.99% of the time require your NUS number.

And in some places(namely in England) shops only accept NUS cards.

Our union is considering doing the opposite and having a referndum in the next 18 months - 2 years (or so) about leaving NUS as apparently the NUS are ripping the uni off!
