I heard that the cut off mark for english was 64%, there can't be any truth in this can there?  From what I've heard it has been over60% for a C in previous years as the interpretation has supposedly been classed as 'too easy'.  However over 60% is a bit much just for a pass so is this the case? blink.gif

I think you may have heard wrong. The pass rate for Higher English this year was 64%. However, the cut-off mark for an A last year was 64% and for a Band 1 you needed 71%.

It has never been >60% for a C though.

Surprisingly this year, more people generally did better in the Critical Essays than on the Close Reading. The former regarded as being too hard (due to poetry questions), while the latter was commented on as being 'too easy' - doesn't seem true then.

You really really sure on this one!?

Cos I find it really hard to believe that a an A was only 64%!!! I know a lot of ppl who got As in their prelims and only came out with Cs! I would have thot that a C would be 64%!!

In 2003 the pass mark for an A was 64% and a band 1 A was 71%.

Grade Number of candidates (%) Minimum mark for grade
Upper A 1,664 (5.6%) 71%
Lower A 2,191 (7.4%) 64%
B 5,573 (18.8%) 54%
C 8,108 (27.4%) 45%
Compensatory 4,368 (14.8%) 40%
No award 7,708 (26.0%) 0%

The 2004 PA reports have not been released yet so nobody really knows what the pass mark is for specific grades this year as yet.

However, the average mark for higher english 2004 was 49.9%.
The average mark for close reading 2004 was 48.6% and the average mark for critical essays in 2004 was 51.2%.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

Still and A though. Doesn't matter what your bands are you, you still got your results.
