I was wondering if somebody could tell me the average university costs for Uni's in Scotland (or preferably Computing or Engineering courses). Im going to the Edinburgh Uni open day on a week on friday and will ask these types of q's then but was just wondering as background knowledge just now. smile.gif

Thanks

what do you mean by costs, exactly?
when i'm dancin' with you,
tomorrow doesn't matter,
turn that music up,
till the windows start to shatter,
cos you're the only one who can get me on my feet,
& i can't even dance

200 a month sounds more appropriate. We had one of those LEAPS "how to survive student life" finance meetings and had to calculate how much each student would spend a week based on certain scenarios.

We did figure out how to survive on 10 a week. It involves eating 3 tins of baked beans a day, and not doing very much else.

Oh dear. I'd be so full of gas if I ate only tins of baked beans...o.O

I'd rather be eating curries...yummy!

Along these lines - the SAAS estimates of how much it costs to live are completely unrealistic. The cheapest accomodation I can get is still more expensive than what they estimate. It's going to be absolutely hellish once I'm out of halls. pinch.gif

Edit: Total living costs are going to be around 5500 for a student in Glasgow I think - housing ~3000 in first year, 1000 in leisure (ie. going to the pub), 650 for food, 200 books, 350 clothes, 150 travel and 150 on something else I've forgotten.

That's much more expensive than the just over 4000 that SAAS estimate.

Definitely not 200 a year on drink! I can spend up to 40 on a night out which is just transport and drink really! Makes me shudder to think how much cash I waste.

How much uni costs you will depend where you live really. If you live at home you'll spend less though my travel cost me over 300 for the year.

SAAS money + job = fine for money though

Pfft, if you count stuff you actually need, i spent very little last year... prolly under 200 a month.

Then again, i bought a laptop, speakers, 2 books, new snowboard + boots, jacket and a holiday!

As for drink, i'm very tight with my money on that front... I have other ways of amusing myself too.

I think, living away from home(for both semesters) I'd have been able to live off of about 5000-5500 and the maximum loan you can possibly get is about 4800.

And that was me living in uni accomodation, living in private accomodation next year is going to be far more expensive.

The estimates they give you are if you spend a bare minimum, so if you plan on having very much of a life at all I'd budget a bit more for it.

And depending on your course I'd expect to spend at least 200 on books, quite easily a lot more than that.

I got bored so i estimated how much it would cost me to live on my own and its well over the SAAS amount you get.

I get 6350 per year with some over estimates, so will be lower. That's for two people staying together outside of Uni halls, living in Baillieston and going to Strathclyde University.

It includes Rent, TV + Phone + Internet all from Tellewest, TV License, food, Travel, Gas and Electricity, Books, Uni Gym and misc spending.

I would say there is probably upto 1000 per person over estimate though.

About 5000-5200 for my first year at St Andrews. The 200 for drink on a year thing is a joke, i spent that at least in freshers week on drink/entertainment and all that sort of stuff. That was for everything with food/accomodation/drink course costs/ travel home/ misc. It was a fun but expensive first year sad.gif
