its in 2001 (AH paper), B6 b) i)

line L2: x / -2 = (y+2 ) / -1 = (z - 9 ) / 2

Obtain an equation on the plane that is perpendicular to L2 and passes through the pt (1, -4, 2)

I have no idea what to do. There is the rest of the question as well, but I don't think it should be relevant biggrin.gif

OK, from (a) ii) you should have got that the direction of L2 is {\bf{d}}_2  = -2{\bf{i}} -{\bf{j}} +2{\bf{k}}.

Now, to get the equation of the plane, we can use {\bf{r}}.{\bf{n}} = {\bf{a}}.{\bf{n}}.
  • {\bf{n}} is normal to the plane, so we can use {\bf{d}}_2
  • {\bf{a}} is the position vector of a point lying in the plane, so we can use (-1, 4, 2) for that
  • {\bf{r}}=(x,y,z) (but written as a column vector)

Combining all that, you should get -2x-y+2z=6 smile.gif
