2001 Higher Human
Section B Question 7a (iii)
When the total voume of blood leaving the heart in one minute when the rate of oxygen uptake is 1.6 litres/minute?
from the graph the stroke volume is 150cm^3
and the bpm is 110
the offical answer is 16.5litres/min
but i have *no* idea how to get to that
can anyone help explain it to me?
thanks xx

i sat for ages and couldn't work it out and now i posted it i got it
trust me
150cm^3 needs to be converted into litres = 0.15 mulitplied by the bpm which gives 16.5litres/min
sorry, i'm embarrased now hehe

Cardiac Output = Stroke Volume * Heart Rate
Cardiac Output = 0.15litres * 110
Cardiac Output = 16.5litres/min
Edit: Oh, you got it now.

Some other relationships which might be useful here are
Arterial Blood Pressure = Cardiac Output x Total Peripheral Resistance
CO = (ABP-MSFP)/TPR
VR = (MSFP-RAP)/RvR
CO=VR
And to measure cardiac output you would use the Fick method (probably indirect, using some sort of respiratory apparatus) or perhaps an indicator dilution method such as the Stewart Hamilton method.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

No it won't.
It will if you are going on to do any form of medicine which people sitting human biology have a higher than average potential to do.
