I think I'll be choosing self-catering cause it's so much cheaper.

I'm not sure yet. I cant cook to save myself. And Im not jsut saying that - I REALLY cant cook anything except raspberry brulie (sp).
I even had individual cooking lessons at school because I'm so unbelievably awkward in the kitchen. wink.gif

Im not even sure how to work the washing machine. huh.gif

But I would like to try self catering to see how I go. And its cheaper and thats what I need. smile.gif

Self catering all the way, catered halls are overpriced and inflexible. Besides you learn more biggrin.gif

I think it depends on what course you're going for. If you're in for a demanding course with a 9-6 day of lectures and formal work only, and that excludes your own private study, you really don't want to have to worry about cooking/washing up and stuff.

Well, counting the numbers ~£3500 seems and awful lot to pay for 34 weeks accommodation. A friend and I were wondering if it would be better buying our own place. But it is Edinburgh and that means prices will be sky high. Any ideas?

What is one meant to do after Year 1 anyway?

St Andrews is closer to £4000+ for 30. You have it pretty good dry.gif , even getting a flat on Market Street is cheaper.

The only cheap self catering in St Andrews is Albany park and Fife Park right?

But they seem to be sweeped away quite quickly. So a first year student might be forced to get something more expensive? huh.gif
Nothing!!!!!!!!

Yep, most probably, especially Albany, lots of groups of 2nd years were rejected and were completely screwed because of it. In first year you really have no way of determining where you are going to stay. Besides in Fife Park they are reducing each houses capacity from 6 to 5 bedrooms making the situation even tighter. Just put down your prefered accomodation type and see what you get. If you get a catered hall, dont plan on going out much.

I'm choosing catered in my first year, just to avoid the extra stress of having to cook. Aberdeen Uni's catered prices are really good too. smile.gif

Speaking of buying flats. My parents and I have decided it might just be better in the long run to invest in a flat in Edinburgh. Trouble is, most of the cheap ones are in crappy areas (I wanted Leith tongue.gif)... £100 a week is quite a bit to pay for money you're never going to get back.

looks like its quite even but could do with more votes. to all you 5th years too- what would you do:?

i rekon ill go catered jus because of the socialising aspect whereas self catered you are just with a set wee group of peolpe in the first year.
