I need this rearranged so that Dmin = whatever.

This is beyond me. Please help.

I can't show you it any other way really.

I shall try to type it out...

n = sin (( A + Dmin ) / 2 )
--------------------------
sin( A / 2 )

Typing out didn't work too well.... it's n equals the top stuff over the bottom stuff.

Would it be like:

\begin{align*}n=\frac {\sin \left(\frac {A + D_{\textrm{min}}}{2}\right)}{\sin \left( \frac{A}{2}\right)}\end{align*}

?

Edit: Sorry, for some reason, LaTeX won't render this expression properly.

Maybe this will clarify...

n equals the following:
sin (( A + Dmin ) / 2 ) ... this is then divided by sin( A / 2 ) . The result is n.

Ooooh, that is a tricky question. I'll have a look for you and get back to you.

Edit: I get Dmin=nA+A but I don't think it's right. It doesn't look like a Highers question to me.

I'm seeing the equation you got now... it wasn't done fully on my screen for some reason before. Yeh, that's it.

I get this:

\begin{align*}D_{\textrm{min}}=-A+2\sin^{-1} \left( n\sin \left( \frac{A}2 \right)  \right)\end{align*}

just by multiplying by \sin\frac{A}2 then taking inverse sine on both sides.

Thanks.

Can someone verify that that is correct please? Quite important that I get this correct.

I'd trust Steve over me lol. Is this for a physics investigation by any chance? Looks like the angle of deviation for prisms.

Yeh, but it should be do-able with higher maths knowledge. Unfortunately, I did it a year ago, so I'm not gonna be able to do this kinda stuff with any ease at all.

I agree with what Steve said - it's not a very nice expression, but if you substitute it into the original expression, you'll find that it works.

Maple (a computer algebra package) also gives that as the answer biggrin.gif
