We have received course summary notes from a user of the HSN site. We are currently working through them to convert them to our style and format.
They will be available long before Prelim time to leave plenty of opportunity for revision!
Please note, the notes for the optional third unit will be on Computer Networking and not any of the other optional units.

Unfortunately, getting the notes done has turned out to be a lot more work than I expected. I don't know when they will be available.
If you have access to the Heriot Watt University Scholar Programme I would suggest you have a look at the notes on Software Development there. (Your school has to be registered with the Scholar Programme though.) Other than that, I don't know of any notes on parameter passing etc.
If you would like help with part of the Sotware Development unit it might be useful if you say which programming lanuage you are using at school and it might be easier to explain things.
Please reply with any specific questions on parameter passing etc and I (and other members) will be happy to try to clear some things up.

I use COMAL at school btw!
The questions I don't get out of the past papers are...
(1) What are the advantages of using parameter passing?
(2) How does the use of parameter passing increase the portability of a program?
(3) What are the differences of using passing by value rather than passing by reference?
=> I think this answer is that passing by value means that the variable is only used for input to a subprogram, while passing by reference means the variable can be passed into and out of the subprogram. And with reference passing the value of the variable can be changed, this is not the case with passing by value.
Just general questions like that, and also an array! I dont quite understand what this is! I think it is used to store lists of data...??
Any help appreciated, cheers,
Mark

I think that is for Higher Information Systems.
The optional topics in Higher Computing are : -
Computer Programming (being discontinued next session)
AI
Multimedia
Computer Networking

I think he meant Multimedia lol. It is very very similar to Hypermedia in Info Systems.

Where can you obtain the multimedia notes from, as I am studying Hypermedia and I think that these notes will help me in my understanding.
Is there any link?

No unfortunately there's not. I'm gonna contribute mine to the site so then there will be. Hope it'll help.

I've not looked for those specific notes, but you might find them on the NQ Online site; this has all the official course materials, with many of them available for download. |
that's a good site. i never thought about there. sqa website is just informative. that has lots of resources.
cheers!

Hey!
I think the Computing section is good. It's a shame the notes for unit 3 are only for Networking though (I do Multimedia). Maybe in the future more unit 3 notes could be added.

It's not much help to people sitting exams this year, but I am currently writing Course Notes for Higher Computing (like we have for Maths) with help from notes submitted by a very old member of the site that doesn't come back very often. There will be notes for each Outcome and hopefully they'll cover the new and old Higher Computing course.
There probably won't be anything released before the exams though, they haven't been a high priority lately with my exams and all - sorry about that.
But at least anyone doing Computing next year should have access to HSN Computing notes - please spread the word
