I was wondering if anyone knew when using the equation which applies to partition coeficient whether it matters which way the ether and acid go?! like does K = ether/acid or acid/ether? Everywhere puts ether/acid yet I can't seem to find an explanation to why it is that way round!! any help would be appreciated!! thanx!! smile.gif

not sure, but doesn't it have something to do with with which immiscible solution is on top?

The Partition Coefficient just gives you a ratio. ether/acid is probably always used as it gives a ratio of greater than 1 and so is easier to interpret than if it was acid/ether.

e.g.

ether/acid = 4/1, so 4 times as much of the substance will be found in the ether
acid/ether = 1/4, so acid contains 4 times less than the ether (more difficult to understand)

If that makes sense blink.gif
