HI I wanted to know if some of you guys could help me!
Next year (S6) I'm doing the following subjects: Advanced Higher Maths, Higher Biology, Higher Geography and Higher Information Systems and perhaps Higher PC Passport if my school does it.
There are a few questions I have though:
1. I have never done biology before (well atleast since S2) and this will be a crash higher. Will I find it extremely difficult?
2. Is Ad H Maths similar in difficulty to H Maths?
3. Is Higher Information Systems relatively easy? Or does it require a lot of work?
4. Will I be able to take up Higher Geography quite readily after getting a 2 for it in S4?
So far I have maths(1), english(2), computing(1), physics(1), accounts and finance(2) and geography(2) at credit level, and craft and design(3) at general I expect to get an A for both physics and computing higher this year, and a B for higher maths. I expect to fail higher english and either fail int 2 chemistry or get a C.
I've supplied this information because I've heard there is a lot of chemistry in biology and I'm not good at it! I've heard from someone else in the forum that higher info sys is good to pick up in S6, why is that?
The way I feel right now, I want to get as many qualifications as I can get, unless my computing teacher does pc passport in column A, I'll have a free column, and the only other subject I can pick in the free column is english and I hate that!
Thanks for your help,
Shaun.

Hi Shaun,

AH Maths is much more difficult than Higher. First of all there are 5 Outcomes in each Unit (so that's an extra 3 all together). I would say the Outcomes are about the same length as Higher ones (if not longer). Anothing thing is, there is no formula sheet in the exam and you have to remember everything - I would say this makes the subject very difficult as it's more a test of memory (in some parts) than your ability in Maths. I did AH this year and I really enjoyed it. Most people in my class who got an A for Higher will pass but you might need to work very hard if you get a B in Higher. If you like Maths though, then you will enjoy the course.

I don't want too speak to soon (since I've not got my results yet) but I found Information Systems to be relatively straightforward. I think it helps to pick it up in S6 because you have the experience of sitting Highers and if you are doing Advanced Highers it will feel a little less demanding. There were two IS Higher classes at my school this year, one with all S6 and one with all S5. The S6 class did better in the prelim so that's why I think it's a good subject to take in S6. Also (apart from part of the Databases unit) it's just mostly learning things and if you've done Highers before, you might find this more straightforward than you did in S5.
I don't know about the other points but hopefully someone else can help out. I hope this is of some use

I got a 2 for standard grade geography last year
I got an A band 1, and the highest in my class in the prelim and i am predicted an A band 1.
I persoanlly think Higher Geography is easier than SG, when i say "easy", i dont mean u can just fly through it. There are lots of topics to cover, and u have to memorise all the answers, and be able to write really really fast. As the Higher Geography exam is the same every year, and u can predcit the questions that will come up. Although i enjoyed the Higher course more than the SG.
If you got a 2 for SG, im sure u will be able 2 manage higher and get a grade B at the minimum, but if u put all ur effort like me
I hope this helps

Higher Biology is a simple subject. There is hardly any chemistry in it at all and certainly nothing hard. it will be assumed you've never done chemistry so you will be taught anything you need to know anyway. I always thought biology is easier than chemistry, at some points you may need a bit of Sg knowledge so having a book on that mite give you a bit of background that you may need!
I want to do Pc Passport too! Does anyone know if colleges will run it or if there are any crash computer type courses in colleges over the summer? Thanks!

Some of it is really straight-forward. But the hardest thing is probably not knowing what to revise. You are (usually) given HDSU notes which are so long. Also they tend to ask things which aren't covered in the HDSU notes so that'll make it hard.
However, the notes on this web-site are great, the notes for Information Organisation on this site cover everything you need to know, although in the exam we were asked about the all the stuff needed for an Intranet.
Database Sysems is a skill, so if you do examples (like the Database Specimen Q's on this site and past papers) and read throught the notes you should find this easy.
For Hypermedia (optional unit) you need to learn a lot of stuff, but I've made a few notes which I could e-mail to you next year sometime (or earlier if you want them).

depends what u want to do, if you're thinking about being a doctor or something obviously biology, or if biology interests you anyway. if you're more interested in broadening your scope of education, going for something more arty then spanish, especially if you don't want a year that's going to be too tough on the memory and revision side. higher biology is all about learning a syllabus i guess whereas learning spanish is more about a love for language and shouldn't be as intense, especially at int2.

Spanish is hard and does involve learning a lot at Higher but I got 8 1s in Standard Grade and inside my Spanish 1 i got all 4 sections at a 1 and I aint that intelligent so u should be fine at Int2. I do know someone who did crash higher biology and got an A and she wasnt that bright so it all depends on what u wanna do.
Half ideas, half quality, half a million pound law suit!

My advice to Jill:
I read in one of your previous posts that you have studied Higher French this year. You must obviously have a knack for the languages, and if you'd feel comfortable enough extending you languages to cover Spanish then I suppose it is a good idea, I suppose it would come more naturally to you after studying French to higher level.

Higher Geog is really easy to pick up - they go into SG Geog in more detail while re-teaching the SG course again lol. Got a B when I got a 2 for SG

people are different. higher spanish is obviously harder than int 2 spanish but some people are a lot more comfortable with science subjects, ie some people would find higher biology easier than int2 spanish.
