Yes, I assume a large part of the increase will be due to more children being driven to school. So there is perhaps a laziness factor but I think parental fears have increased too.

Barbers have a red and white pole outside their premises due to tradition. In the Early Modern period most people were illiterate and trades had to have signs which pictorially explained their function - e.g. a green dragon was a sign of hospitality so pubs and taverns had a sign with a green dragon on it outside. Barbers were also surgeons and the red and white striped pole was originally the bloody leg of an animal, wrapped in a bandage.
Also, in the Early Modern Period a peasant wearing a feather in his hat around town could be whipped or taken to the stocks for breaking the bounds of his social status.

The Pu`u `O`o-Kupaianaha eruption of Kilauea, now in its twenty-third year and 55th eruptive episode, ranks as the most voluminous outpouring of lava on the volcano's east rift zone in the past five centuries. By January 2005, 2.7 km3 of lava had covered 117 km2 and added 230 hectares to Kilauea's southern shore. In the process, lava flows destroyed 189 structures and resurfaced 14 km of highway with as much as 35 m of lava.
