Solve for values of θ, in degrees, in the range 0 ≤ θ ≤ 360,

√2 × (sin 2θ + cosθ) + cos 3θ = sin 2θ + cosθ

Bring it on...

I think this may be it:

√2 × (SIN 2x + COS x) + COS x = SIN 2x + COS x

√2 + COS x = (SIN 2x + COS x) / (SIN 2x + COS x)

COS x = 1 - √2

x = COS^(-1) (-0.414)

x = 114.46°, 245.45°

i replaced theta for x cause i couldnt find it.

Nice try, but hint - the answers are nice round values, its a non calc paper. It is supposed to be for the most able students... lol. I'll admit I spent hours but failed.

Hmm.. that explains several algebraic flaws in your solution. Nonetheless its quite impressive you tried! Don't know if its Advanced Higher, but it definitely is above Higher Standard. Don't think the Advanced Higher course has any trig - other than cot, cosec, sec, and possibly hyperbolic functions. But it seems probably an A+ Higher question...

Its the AEA - Advanced Extension Award. I was lookin through this resource with Cambridge entrance type papers and it had them on it, so I figured why not. Its sat by all potential A candidates down south. It apparently distinguishes the creme de la creme from the best. You end up having a "merit" or "distinction." Sample paper and mark scheme available at www.edexcel.org and if you select the qualification as AEA and subject as Mathematics. Its from that paper.

John, you have PM.
