At my school its basically a popularity contest!
The 5th years put down 10 names of people and then with this and the help of teachers nominations they are chosen - the same goes for 6th year!
once you are a prefect you stay one!
no need to be smart or good at things - just need to have a parent as a teacher at the school or your family is well known.

in total there are about 20 5th years out of 100 5th year pupils and 30 6th year pupils out of 85

Our school is very annoying and  has favourite pupils and families
probably because they are an independent school so not part of glasgow city council- and think they are better  
but also because they want to pretend they are a private school

Out of interest, which school do you go to? Sounds a lot like mine

i suspect that it is "in a democracy, we should all have equal opportunities" and what we do with our equal right is up to us. prefects in "some schools" symbolize a hierarchy, but it can also be said that its just an easier way to get the year's voice heard by teachers (if that ever happens is a different matter).

He's right though we should all be equal. I didnt like the prefect system at all. The head girl got it because of academic grades (5 A-band 1s) and had never done anything in the school. She wore the shortest skirts and actually was a party girl. She didnt have a lot of common sense despite her grades and intelligence. After she got head-girl because of her grades she then got asst head of the social commitee because of her popularity and party attitude.
Everything is about popularity, whether its with teachers or students.Its a bit unfair. I am poor, couldnt afford a tutor and couldnt go buy a new jacket every week. I worked hard for that school and got very little appreciation, they wouldnt even let me do the jobs I voluntereed for as prefect as they'd rather have my friend who was a house captain there.

Well yeah i never got any senoir position in the school other than pribcipal cornet of the school band

The school believed i couldnt do anything because i was quiet so positions went to loud mouthed people with great opinions of themselves. Hell my house caption was 2 5th Years but we were the house of the year so what can i say

Well our house captains were a dsylexic friend of mine, she couldnt read typed prayers or anything, she was a really nice person though and a guy friend who is really quiet but goes on power trips.

I was one of the House Captains at my school and I got it because all the 6th yr pupils beloning to that house voted for me. I wouldn't say I was necessarily loudmouthed - infact probably the opposite.

Our School captain was the Runner up to Dux, but the Vice-Captain got straight A's in his Highers. So that wasn't the reason she got it. The person who best fits the job should get it. That's what happened at our school!

at my school all 6th years are prefects so it doesnt really mean much except we get to skip the lunch queue and we have duties to 'insure the safety of younger pupils' or somethin like that
our head boy/girl an deputy head boy/girl are decided by a staff an 6th yr pupils vote
this year's head boy was basically popularity but the guy who got head is a good choice but deputy head is useless
the girls was just a joke though 5 girls were separarted by 1 or two votes an those five only got 8ish votes each almost every girl has at least one vote so no1 is happy cos the deputy head is stuck up an will do what she wants an not listen to anyone but the head girl has turned out ok even though no one knows who voted for her

our school pupils can only nominate themselves for prefect or head boy/girl, the staff choose who becomes what

but the S6's had a vote one day while skiving off from soc ed and the same people who the S6's wanted for head boy/girl got given by the staff anyway so its all good.. incidently i'm the head boy, =P

we have 16 prefects in our school based on how nice, involved in extra curriculur stuff u r, and how clever i think
im a prefect, although perhaps an undeserved one

This year my school has decided to make all of 6th year prefects and in return they head is going to pay for either our Yearbook or our Formal Leavers do', fab eh?

Almost everyone applied to be a prefect.
Only 6th years can be one.
I didn't apply.
About half the year became prefects.
I didn't apply because I don't see it adding much to my CV. I have an older sis who was a prefect. It used up tonnes of her free periods, and most of it is just stuff which the teachers can't be bothered doing. I see the prefect system as a glamorized way of cutting the school budget by convincing us to do the work of those the school would otherwise have to employ.
Takes up way too much time, little benefit. I have plenty of other stuff to do in sixth year.
