When copper is added to a solution containing zinc nitrate and silver nitrate:...

Answer: a deposit of silver forms.

I got it right by a lucky guess but how is this the answer? Is it anything to do with Silver being closer to Copper in the Reduction Equations table?

This is a standard grade question, you need to understand precipitation. There is a table of solubilities in the data book that you use for this.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

If you use the electrochemical series the zinc displaces the copper and reacts with the nitrate which then leaves a deposit of silver. biggrin.gif
