Despite spending hours trying different things, I just haven't been able to fully understand these. I do know the very basics such as vertical and horizontal components, but its mainly applying these to problems and integrating them with the equations of motion that is quite impossible. Any tips/suggestions/help much appreciated... Just been workin through some oldies and examples I can find are 1995 P1 no. 3, 1996 P1 no. 3,4,5.

Incidentally if any one wants them I've got quite a few past papers and if there's no objection I'm more than willin to share...

Well for 1995 Paper 1 Q3 i can help:

You start off with making two tables, one for Horizontal Components and one for Vertival Components.

Horizontal:

V = 40ms-1
U = 40ms-1
a = 0ms-2
s = ?
t = ?

Vertical:

V = ?
U = 0ms-1
a = 10ms-2
S = 80m
t = ?

Secondly, we would find the time it takes for the cannonball to fall.

S = Ut + ½at2
80 = (0t) + (½ x 10 x t2)
80/(½x10 )= t2
t = √16
t= 4s

Thirdly, we use the 4s to find the Horizontal distance the cannonball travels.

S = Ut + ½at2
S = (40 x 4) + (½ x 0 x 402)
S = 40 x 4
S = 160m

So the answer is B 160m.

Hope that helps, ill see if i can find the 1996 paper, as i think i may have it.
