If an essay on this came up what would you write about the actual reforms or the reasons behind them.
Also what is the definition for the franchise.

The franchise is simply the vote. If an essay comes up on the growth of democracy you should write more about the reasons for the reform acts rather than just the details of the acts themselves.

There seem to be two types of questions about this: 1. How; and 2. Why did democracy grow? If a question on how democracy grew comes up, I think this concerns all the Acts that were passed. I'd mostly describe the acts, but also put in a bit of reasoning, e.g. "The Ballot Act was introduced in 1872 in an attempt to stop the fear and intimidation which was experienced by voters at elections".
