i did higher in 6th year - 2 guys in my year did advanced higher
when i'm dancin' with you,
tomorrow doesn't matter,
turn that music up,
till the windows start to shatter,
cos you're the only one who can get me on my feet,
& i can't even dance

Well, nearly biggrin.gif

I couldn't do it because there was nowhere nearby offering the course. I done the Database Systems unit thought, and passed the NAB. So if you've got any questions about Database Systems, I should be able to help (having just done some at uni too).

I did do AH Computing, and the project for that is quite similar I think. I have no idea about any of the optional units though smile.gif

Hi,

I've finished my project and i'm doing the systems analysis and design unit. That's not 2 bad but i don't like the databases usit. I can't do event/entity matrixes or life history diagrams. I just got the hang of converting to 3NF. My teacher hasn't given me any notes though coz he says they are all crap, so he's just teaching me what i need 2 know. But i'm finding it hard.

Any useful tips would be great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You might find some useful notes on NQ Online. I used the notes from there to study the Database Systems unit, but I only needed to pass the NAB. I'm not sure what the exam is like, but the NAB was fairly straightforward.

Entity/event matrices seem a bit pointless from what I saw - it was just another task to do that didn't appear to have any practical relevance. You just need to think of all the 'events' (ie add/modify/delete for each entity) and then for each of those, think what you need to do with each entity.

The example in the LT Scotland notes is a hospital appointments system (the matrix is on p40).
  • For 'Add hospital', the only entity affected is the Hospital entity - because you are creating a new instance.
  • Next is 'Add consultant' - I think the notes are actually wrong there, because adding a consultant will just create a Consultant instance - no need to read the Hospital entity.
  • Anyway, to 'Add clinic', an instance of the Clinic entity is created, and we need to read Consultant and Hospital, to get values for the attributes of the Clinic (ie which consultant is taking the clinic, and in which hospital it will be).
And so it goes on. Coming up with the events is probably the hardest bit. Generally, though, it's add/modify/delete for each entitly (plus anything mentioned in the specification).

As for 3NF, it just takes practice. If you've not already seen the hospital appointments example from those notes, you could have a go at doing the normalising yourself. There's also a task on a book publisher's database in those notes, which you might not have done.

Normalising is actually just one way of doing it - at uni it was introduced as more of a ground-up process. So rather than starting with a messy UNF, you just think about what entities you need, and how they relate to each other. You still need to know how to normalise for AH Info Systems, but the other approach might be useful as a way of checking your answers. If you're interested, you should be able to download the notes from the Data and Analysis course at Edinburgh Uni. It's a 6MB PDF, and only up to about p17 is relevant for you.

Hope that helps smile.gif

I am wondering how hard Info Systems is, I'm thinking of crashing Advanced Higher (Note: I am doing Higher Admin and Higher Computing).

Also, what do you have to do in the project?

if u want to go down the computing line and do specialist computing, eg scripting and codes and stuff, that u should take "ADV Computing" rather than "ADV info sys".. its much more useful.

I got an A in higher info systems and have lately been trying to do AH. No schools around are offering it and the head of our dept. is saying he has no room on the timetable even though there is a demand.
