i guess doctors have to do that to help with the psychological development of the mother. he has to be on her side.

I feel that even in the case of rapes the child should be allowed to live, if the mother doesn't want the child, the child should be given up for adoption. This would allow the child to live their life, while their biological mother is living her own life and hopefully their rapist father is serving a jail sentence, and the remainder of their life will be a living hell for them.

I realise this is an old thread but I watched Vera Drake yesterday and it got me thinking about abortion again.

Why should a girl that has been raped have to go through nine months of additional trauma? Don't you think being the victim of a rape is enough to go through without having to have the rapist's offspring inside you, be reminded of it every day, and then go through the pain of giving birth to it? You say this is "allowing the child to live their life" but I wouldn't call a fetus a child. To those who believe life begins at conceptions, a fertilised egg isn't a child. Fertilised eggs are often rejected by the body and expelled in periods (so by that logic many women would be murderers) - the fetus doesn't even have a heartbeat in the first month of pregnancy and can't feel pain until after twenty six weeks, when <1% of abortions are carried out.

However I think it's unfair that this women was jailed for doing something doctors do every day - you can't have one set of rules for one group of people and different rules for another group of people.

I wasn't saying there that I think Doctors should be imprisoned for performing abortions, I am saying that if a woman who performed abortions shouldn't be treated differently from Doctors who perform them. And since the woman was arrested for performing abortions, then so should the Doctors - it's only fair.

Now, relating this to my point, the woman who was arrested for performing 'backstreet' abortions I think, ethically should not have been arrested because Doctors do the exact same thing in hospitals - if they are allowed to do it, then so should that lady.

Does this make sense?

Em my english class did a couple of peoms and stories on back street abortions and the methods to actually abort the feotus tended to cause more harm to the mother which is probably another reason why this woman was arrested. I remember one of the stories mentioned drinking a lot of brandy, running a boiling hot bath, sitting in it then using a knitting needle to remove it. This was actually considered a safe method?!

xx
I'm not a tease i'm just a reminder of what you can't please!!!!!
