I sat it last year, and we were always told to put it in the margin. We also wrote "A1" or "C3" or whatever source it was, when referring to a source. We had a talk from one of the Higher setters, and he recommended this.
I think it just helps the markers see where you've used background knowledge, without them having to work it out.

I didn't and was never told too! It is quite obvious, i think, if you put background knowledge in as it isn't in the sources.
