Hello,

I'm going to Glasgow University to study maths, physics and computer science, but to be honest with you, I have no idea what you really do in computer science - is it like computing?

Thanks for any help,

Also, am I right in saying that if you get accepted in a certain faculty at Glasgow (i've obviously been accepted into the Science) can you pick ANY three subjects?

i.e., could I pick Biology, Chemistry and Maths, even if I don't have Higher Biology or Chemistry?

Do Glasgow offer other Computing related subjects, apart from Computer Science, in the Science Faculty?

As far as i can recall...at glasgow the only computin subject is computin science.

Here is a list of all sciences u can choose from in Level 1 (ie first year):

-Archaeology (none)
-Astronomy (higher maths, physics advised)
-Biology (none)
-Chemistry (higher chemistry)
-CompScience (B at Higher Maths or C at Higher Maths and B at Higher Comp or Info Systems)
-Earth Science (none)
-Electronic Engineering (Higher Maths)
-Environmental Science (none)
-Exploring The Cosmos (none)
-Geography (none)
-Mathematics (higher maths)
-Physics (higher maths and higher physics)
-Psychology (none)
-Science Fundamentals (none)
-Statistics (Higher Maths)

U can choose three of these as long as there is space....wen ur accepted, its to the whole faculty. U do not need to hold the relevant Higher for most of them but some of the more advanced subjects require Higher. I done Physics(pass in Higher Maths and Physics required for this), Maths(pass in higher maths required) and Geography(no previous experience required). I have added the requirements in brackets above

U can also choose a subject from a seperate faculty eg Arts Faculty...altho this is up to the faculty u are choosing from.

I think you can do some things at a slightly lower level or something. My brother did that. He hadn't done maths for a year, and he got a B for it I think, so he started at the lower level.

He was doing Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry at Glasgow. He's now doing Chemistry. You don't have to decide until the end of 2nd year.

u dont have to decide ur degree until the end of second year....

maths and physics are offered at 2 levels....'normal' level and 'advanced' level....advanced is usually for those who hav done advanced higher in that subject

A lot of Computing Science is just the same as Higher/AH but it is more modern, and a lot more programming!! I think at Glasgow they teach Ada in 1st yr, but Strathy start out with Java.

I was at Science @ strathclyde open day today and got a tour of the Computing & Info Sciences dept.

in a phrase computer science: is the best course in the world!!!

no, its about hardware as well as lots of programming, and theory on soft dev. Its the hardware aspect though that seperates it from the software engineering course. The computer science course i dont think bears much AH in terms of level of difficulty in programming but in other aspects yes

If i am not here i am somewhere else

At Glasgow I am going for Accounting and Economics.

Take it that counts as two subjects? Can I choose another one from any faculty e.g. film studies, history, maths?

Yes but the advice we were given at Strathclyde yesterday is "if you aren't interested in programming, don't pick computer science".

At strathclyde programming in 1st yr accounts for 1/6 of your credits, with this rising to about a 1/3 in 2nd yr.

There is lots of stuff about the hardware etc as dave said.

In terms of relation to the courses ; first year uni on Comp Sci covers all the stuff at Higher and Advanced Higher plus a little bit more. And definately more "serious" programming!

no...different faculties have different rules. The Science Faculty allow u to take 3 subjects...but my mate is doin accountancy and she doesnt have a choice...she does accountancy and thats it....she has different lectures and seminars for different topics of accountancy as science ppl do for different subjects. quite hard to explain. u get wot i mean?
