I've got my prelim coming up on Friday; our teacher has already warned us to expect a challenging one. unsure.gif

When is everyone elses prelim?

Our prelim covers Unit 1 & Unit 2. I feel pretty confident with Unit 2 since we've recently had our NAB so most of it is in my head - just got to go through Unit 1 again.

Well, wasn't as hard as my teacher made it out to be.

There were a few tricky questions, which can be expected in AH Chemistry, but apart from that it went pretty well. biggrin.gif

Hope it went well for you! My AH chemistry prelim is on Friday. It's going to have units 2 and 3 in it.

What kind of stuff came up in your prelim? Was it bought in or did the school make it up?

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

I'm not sure if it was made up or not, but one or two questions were the same as the ones that were in the practice questions sheet our teacher gave out to us.

There was a hard Born Harber cycle question in it. The equilibrium stuff that came up was pretty easy. A question about kinetics came up aswell; was v. hard - didn't really understand it. unsure.gif

well my prelims dont start until the end of feb so i have a wee while yet. our prelim is going to have all three units in it. we are just about on the medicines part of unit three so we are almost there. my teacher wants all three units to be in it for a better chance of an appeal.

Have you nearly finished unit 3 already? ohmy.gif

We're just on topic 4 on unit 3 at the moment, but unit 3 wasn't tested in the prelim.

Good luck!

My prelim is on Tuesday sad.gif It's going to have all of unit one and two and about half of unit 3. I'm pretty worried about it, I could do with another week for revision since my other subjects seem to have taken up most of my time.
The race is long, and in the end it's only with yourself.

My prelim was on Friday, it was kinda strange there were several really easy questions but also two that I found impossible (I think they were all old CSYS questions.)

The other strange bit was it seemed to examine bits of the course pretty heavily but miss out other bits completely.

I'm guessing it was home made as I recognised some of the multichoice questions from the last couple of year's exams.

It's bad for appeal purposes to have a paper like that isn't it?

Yes... that's pretty strange. Can is still be used for appeal, if it has CSYS questions in it?

it can still be used its just more likily to be rejected but if you have other evidence than one prelim (like say 2 prelims) then you should be fine

If i am not here i am somewhere else

Yeah, personally I doubt that the success rate of school-made prelims for appeals is that great. Obviously I don't have anything to back that up, it's just my opinion.

You're more likely to get an appeal if you use prelim papers from a company, and have more than one prelim.

i dont know about that myself certainly if its a cut and stick job of old prelims then yes but the quality of some bought in stuff is really really low

As for 2 prelims yes that is a major factor in success i think. I have noticed more subjects in my school starting doing this if they finish the course early(ish)

If i am not here i am somewhere else

I don't know anything about success rates, but the SQA have clear guidelines on making prelims. Using questions from old papers is fine, as long as you keep to certain percentage of questions from one particular paper.

They actually seem a bit more wary of commercial papers. I suppose it's because a lot of teachers might be misled into thinking that buying one in is an easy solution. In fact, the final responsibility about appeals evidence lies with the centre.

I got my AH chemistry results back today. I got 84.5% which is an A biggrin.gif I'm really pleased with that, although I did make some really stupid mistakes.
