There is a hack for Invision Power Board which allows formulae to be posted and displayed in the proper form:

Any thoughts on having that installed here?

Thanks Andy, I'll certainly look into that. The output looks really good, but actually typing the right input looks a little tricky. And I'm not too sure about installing it
- I will have a go though!

The code used to write the forumule is called LaTeX, a typesetting system which has been round for many years. It can be difficult at first, but it's worth learning - most mathematicians and scientists use it to produce reports.

Yeah, I was aware of LaTeX; I'm just not sure it would be worthwhile for most people on the forum. As I say, I'll give it a go and report back here.

Hi Andy, I've downloaded the mod and it looks like I could make the changes (not sure if the server has the required software though, and I don't know if I could get installed).
I was just wondering where you saw this; was it just on the IBPlanet site, or have you seen it in action? It would certainly be handy, but from the screenshot it looks like the output is quite low quality. It would be really good to see it action before spending time getting it to work

I originally saw it on physicsforums.com. On their site the quality is much better:

But they run vBulletin, and I think it's a different mod:

Any luck with this? I was entering an equation into a message earlier and it looked horrible.
I'm fairly good with unix and web configuration stuff if you need a hand.

I've contacted our hosting provider concerning the installation of LaTeX, etc. I don't hold out much hope though.
I'll let you know the outcome.

Unfortunately that mod is not an option for us just now. We have had an idea for a semi-solution to the problem, which could make posting maths content a bit easier. Check the thread about it for more details.
